The Story of Muyo House

The century-spanning story of a Bosnian family's resilience, migration and rooting — from the Balkans to Urla's Zeytinalanı.

Part I

A Journey from the Balkans to Zeytinalanı

In the early 1910s, a family fleeing the darkness of the Balkan Wars — a mother, a father and three sons — left their roots behind and set out for Anatolia. The eldest son was Mustafa; but his Bosnian relatives always called him by the same name: Muyo.

Their path first led to the Karaburun district of İzmir. When the Battle of Gallipoli began in 1915, Muyo's father was conscripted and never returned — he was martyred at Gallipoli. The mother and three children who remained were driven onto the road again when the Greek occupation began: from Karaburun to Urla, and on to the Akşehir district of Konya — an exile, a struggle to survive.

When İzmir was freed from occupation, the family set out for home. And on that very journey, one place touched their hearts once more: Urla. In 1924 they settled in the Zeytinalanı neighborhood and put down roots in this land again.

A Single-Room House: Kuça

The story of Muyo House begins right here. The first shelter the family found was a small, single-room stone house — the room known today as Kuça, meaning "home" in Bosnian.

When their mother passed away at a young age, Muyo went on living in this small house with his two siblings. In time, a second floor of Urla's native stone was added; the house grew, the family grew. Muyo's nine children were all born here, and as the need arose new rooms rose too. Each room carries a name, a memory today:

Part III

A Grandchild's Legacy

Years, decades pass. The house lives on in the family's memory but falls into neglect over time. In 2024, the first grandchild born in that house — a descendant of Muyo's own line — decides to reclaim this historic heritage.

One by one, they restore the walls, the rooms, the courtyard. The aim is not merely to raise an old house back up; it is to keep the memories of the past alive and carry this story into the future.

And so, with this labor and this love, Muyo House is born.

Today

Muyo House Today

Set on a 6,000 m² estate, Muyo House is an intimate boutique hotel of just 5 special rooms. Each room carries a trace of the family's story: Erik, Dut, Badem, İncir and, of course, Kuça — the family's first shelter.

Here, guests spend their days in two pools designed separately for adults and children, on a 1,200 m² grass football pitch, and under the shade of centuries-old olive trees. The tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelons, peppers and corn grown in the 1,000 m² organic garden are brought to the breakfast table each morning; the olives and olive oil on the table come from this same soil.

Muyo House is the living, breathing form of a story spanning more than a century. Every guest is, in truth, a visitor to the table, the shade and the memories of Muyo's grandchildren.
